Studying Away- Library Support for Students: Studying Away and the Library

Welcome

Whether you will study in another country or at another U.S. college, the library is prepared to assist in your scholarly endeavors.

While in many cases you'll be able to use the library at your program’s affliated school, please know that you also may rely on many of the Bowdoin Library resources while you're away.

No matter where you find yourself...
the Bowdoin Library can offer resources and assistance

*How do I get research assistance?

You can reach us by email and get a response usually within 24 hours. Or when the reference desk is open you can chat online with us. All options are found on the Ask Us page. If you'd like specialized help in your academic area contact a subject librarian liaison

If your research includes human subjects, please read the guidelines from Bowdoin's Institutional Review Board.

*Can I get articles?

You have access to pretty much all of the library's full text article databases and individual online journals. But just make sure you start the process from the Bowdoin library website. When you select a database or journal you'll be prompted to sign in - just use your email username and password.

If the article you need is not available, or is only available in a Bowdoin print journal, you may request digital delivery using an Interlibrary Loan (ILL) request form. Just log in with your email username and password (if it's your first time using the service you'll be prompted to provide contact information).  While off campus you will need to update your ILL user registration-- under 'tools' select 'change user information'; select 'status', then choose 'study away".

*Can I get books?

Sorry, no. At least not physical books. However, Interlibrary Loan staff will be glad to request a scanned book chapter from another library and send it via email.

Also, the staff in ILL is happy to scan individual book chapters for you from Bowdoin's physical book collection.

In addition, we have purchased a large number of e-book collections which you can access through CBBcat. Check out the e-book guide for more information. .

*If you want to practice a language...

  • Try Mango Languages, an online learning system.
  • Also, Duolingo, "a free language learning and crowd-sourced text translation platform."

*I'd like to find out more about my destination...

*Who can I contact for help?

And... if you'd like to share with the campus what you're reading in your exotic locale, post a comment to Bowdoin Reads.
