Statistical Data, a Bowdoin Library guide

  • A great way to get inspired is to consult a statistical compendium, providing a variety of statistics from a variety of sources. On the "Search Strategies" tab of the guide, use Strategy 2. Data Planet, Statista, Social Explorer, and/or Statistical Abstract of the United States are great places to start.
  • Another way to get inspired is to browse our list of core statistical databases on the "Core Databases" tab of the guide.
  • If you have a pretty good idea of what data you want but you can't find them ... or if you want to brainstorm some ideas, set up an appointment with me!

Selected criteria for evaluating data for this project

  1. Are the data from a reliable, authoritative source?
  2. Are there enough data? To determine that, count the number of data points that are available.
  3. Is there an adequate range of values in the data? To determine that, begin by looking at the minimum and maximum values in the data.
  4. Can you use the data to modulate your video as desired? To decide that,
    • understand the data.
    • think about the connection between the data and the video.
