Coeducation at Bowdoin College

Primary sources about coeducation at Bowdoin

Welcome

Introduction

In the spring of 1971, transfer student Susan Jacobsen became the first woman to be graduated from Bowdoin College.  The following fall, Bowdoin matriculated its first coeducational class, which included sixty-five first-year women.

This guide contains information about official College records in the Archives that deal with the subject of coeducation.  Due to privacy laws and rules of confidentiality that govern access to such official college records, some materials may be restricted.  Please inquire with Special Collections & Archives staff for more information or to request access. We can work with the office that created the materials to determine what, if any, records can be made available.

Additionally, please see Forty Years: The History of Women at Bowdoin, for oral histories and other materials about coeducation. This site was created as a class project by the students in Professor Jennifer Scanlon’s Fall 2011 class “Forty Years: The History of Women at Bowdoin” (GWS 280).
