Course Materials: Affordability, Accessibility, and Sustainability

How do I decide whether I should ask students to purchase a book?

Students should be given the opportunity to budget for and purchase books and materials that...

  • are essential to student success in the course

            AND

  • are assigned for reading in their entirety, or at least more than 50%

Students should not be asked to purchase books, software, or subscriptions that...

  • are not essential to their success in the course
  • need to be referenced but not owned
  • are available as unlimited ebook licenses through the library
  • are less than 50% assigned reading
  • are in the public domain
  • would be nice for them to have in a personal library

To support faculty in reducing textbooks costs for students, the Library and its staff will:

  • purchase books that you want to use less than 50% of
  • check to see if an unlimited ebook license can be purchased
  • offer Bowdoin Digital Delivery to facilitate posting readings to Canvas
  • offer a fancy scanner to help you or your ADC scan readings easily and efficiently
  • order a book for the collection that you think you might want to assign, and hold it for you to check out first
  • help you interlibrary loan books you might want to assign, so you can review them
  • help you determine whether your chosen reading is in the public domain
  • help find alternative readings
  • assist in searching for and vetting Open Educational Resources (OER)
  • help you decide how much of a book or reading to post to Canvas (copyright law, Fair Use)
