Helpful hints on how to access the library databases, catalogs, and resources from off campus.

Getting the Most from your Bowdoin access

Make the most of your access to the Library's subscription resources, including ebooks, journals, magazines, newspaper, video, and much more. This guide includes helpful hints for remotely accessing the Bowdoin Library resources and services if you are working remotely or in residence. The boxes below, on this page, will show you how to identify yourself as a current Bowdoin student, staff or faculty in "Google Scholar," "One Search," "HathiTrust" and our databases.

 

Pro-Tip:

Don't pay for articles you find on the internet!  Follow the instructions below to make sure you have full access to the resources at Bowdoin CollegeIbrary, and if we don't have what you need use Bowdoin Digital Delivery/Interlibrary Loan to request it. 

Acessing Bowdoin's databases, videos, articles and more

Doing library research from home or off-campus?

First, start from the Library's website where you will be able to authenticate that you are part of the Bowdoin College community.  There are two methods of authentication for accessing our subscription articles, databases, ebooks, and audio and video streaming services:

Method 1: Though our EZProxy
When you click on a link to a database, article, ebook, video or other resource, you may see a log in screen.  Follow the instruction on this screen to access the resource.

 

Method 2: VPN access
You may also connect directly to the Bowdoin network through the College's VPN.  Information about installing and using VPN access is available on the IT website.

Google Scholar

There are a couple of ways to identify yourself as a current Bowdoin College student, faculty, or staff member. You can set as Bowdoin your library to access links to subscription to our resources in the Settings of Google Scholar.    You can also log in to Google Scholar through the Library, see the video below for more information.

OneSearch and HathiTrust

In OneSearch you are able to search most of Bowdoin's subscriptions and databases in just one search.   To get the most of OneSearch, access to full text, and search all the resources available to you, log in using the "Bowdoin User?" link in the top right corner.   See the video below for more information.
