Medieval and Early Modern Manuscripts in Special Collections & Archives

Introduction

This guide describes the original Medieval, Renaissance, and selected Early Modern manuscripts available for study in Bowdoin College Library's Special Collections & Archives.  Among the works available for consultation are Italian, Latin, and French religious and literary manuscripts as well as examples of legal documents and letters. Examples range from single sheets to thick codices, and are on paper, vellum, and parchment.  The guide also includes some recommended beginning reading for those interested in the study of early manuscripts.
