Wabanaki Alliance (1973). Indian Resources Center, 1973.This pan-Wabanaki publication was published in the height of legal and advocacy activity surrounding the Maine Indian Land Claims case. This landmark case saw the Penobscot and Passamaquoddy tribes join together to fight the U.S. government and the State of Maine for the return of their ancestral lands, lands which had been taken through illegal and unratified treaties, especially a 1794 treaty that violated the Indian Trade and Intercourse Act of 1790. The Wabanaki Alliance brought together poems, opinions, reporting, and other writings by members of the Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, Mi’kmaq, and Maliseet tribes. It was edited by Steve Cartwright, a non-Native, and was affiliated with the Diocesan Human Relations Services in Orono, Maine, and was published monthly.
