Notes about Sound Recordings

Although not specifically stated in CMOS 17, it is common practice to add the manufacturer's number to differentiate recordings. The manufacturer's number usually appears on the disc label or the container and can be found in Compass with the label "Music no."
If a date or other information cannot be determined from the recording, consult a library catalog or other resource. "Citations without a date are generally unacceptable. If no date can be found, use 'n.d.' (for no date)." Information taken from the catalog or other resource should be placed in square brackets ([ ]).
Recordings may be listed in a separate discography rather than within a bibliography (see CMOS 17, 12.262). If included in a bibliography, they are best grouped under an appropriate subheading. See CMOS 17, fig. 14.12 for an example discography.

Streaming and Online Sound Recordings

When citing recordings found online or in a databases, use as many of the same elements as you would when citing physical recording, but omit the format and add a DOI or URL.
